activity description
Novus team geared up again on January 17, 2017. This time we teamed up with another charity entity (QiZhi) to visit a remote town called ShiZao located at northern part of Guangdong Province of China.
An elementary school with one grade missing
Shilan Elementary School was established in early 70s. By 90s its construction was verified as too dangerous to stay. The school was re-constructed with the fund from Zhou family in Hongkong in 1999 and was since then renamed to ShilanDatung Elementary School.
Principal told us that ShilanDatung served in the area of Longnan village. It currently housed 128 kids and 8 teachers in 6 classes. It was noted this year that there is one grade missing (5th grade) because only 9 kids in the village are supposed to attend this grade. This number is not qualified to form a class, and these 9 kids were forced to go to another school located at a distant county where they either boarded at school or live with their relatives. No surprise when we learned no library in this school.
Love shined on the children
In just a few minutes, we installed a library. Bookshelves equipped with more than two thousands of books, together with tables and chairs assembled by volunteers were in place. Kids, after spending some time playing in the field, returned to surprisingly to find this amazing new library.
We spent the whole afternoon with kids playing games and teaching them how to use ebooks. When a big birthday cake was brought in, all kids all rejoiced with happy smile.
A total value of 170,000 RMB was donated to ShilanDatung in this event. That includes the top valued 178 ebooks donated by “Novus”, 2000 books and 128 bags by Qizhi, 300 school uniforms by YiDong, 1000 books by Yuexiu Chamber of Commerce, and many others.
Ebooks meets Kids from the mountainous area
Novus gave each child a mobile library…..ebooks. Ebooks provides a completely different reading experience to the kids. Compared to other tablet products, ebooks creates no eye strain after long term reading. Furthermore each ebook is preinstalled selected contents screened by teachers and experts.
Our heart melted when we saw the exciting faces of kids as they opened ebook boxes. Through Novus program, we definitely will collect more joy from the kids in next event. And we all look forward to.
